SSSD has an opening for a Principal Electro-mechanical Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, CA. The Principal Electro-mechanical Engineer will fulfill mechanical engineering activities for precision moving electro-mechanical products. This includes leading engineering development efforts for complex mechanized and opto-mechanical units with cradle-to-grave hardware ownership from product conception to production. Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the completion of specific programs and projects as a responsible engineer
  • Possess technical responsibility for product end-item performance at the configured item level
  • Represent the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues on specific projects
  • Develop technical specifications, conceptual designs, trade studies, detail designs, procedures, reports
  • Substantiate design with supporting analysis and buy-in from adjacent stakeholder disciplines
  • Collaborate with suppliers and external partners for technology and business development needs
  • Develop preliminary and critical design review content for peer and customer presentations
  • Create and review technical data packages including fabrication, source control, and assembly drawings
  • Provide engineering leadership during prototype and production hardware assembly & test
  • Provide as needed engineering support to material review boards and failure review boards
  • Serve as a technical mentor within the organization by sharing of lessons learned and best practices
  • Work with agility and minimal direction to complete concurrent program tasks on schedule
  • Employ strong interpersonal and communication skills while operating within an integrated product team
  • Failure to obtain results or erroneous decisions would typically result in serious program delays and considerable expenditure of resources

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM technical discipline from an ABET accredited university with 5 years of engineering professional experience; OR M.S degree in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM technical discipline from an ABET accredited university with 3 years of engineering professional experience; OR PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM technical discipline from an ABET accredited university with 0 years of engineering professional experience
  • Must have 3 or more years of experience using in Creo, Solidworks, NX, or CATIA V5 industry CAD software
  • Must have 3 or more years of experience with development, qualification, or production of mechanized or opto-mechanical products for end-use in harsh environmental conditions
  • Must have experience with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance (GD&T) applications per ASME Y.14-5 and tolerance stack analysis
  • Must have experience with first order structural and thermal analysis and relevant analysis tools
  • Candidate must have ability to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Government security clearance at the Top Secret level

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM technical discipline from an ABET accredited university
  • Active U.S. Government security clearance at the Secret level with a background investigation date within 10 years
  • Experience with successful design, development, analysis, and verification of mechanized or opto-mechanical products in Aerospace and Defense
  • Demonstrated application of hardware systems engineering associated with the integration of products into complex Aircraft and/or Spacecraft subsystems
  • Experience with development of process improvements and standardized tools
  • Experience with ENOVIA/SMARTEAM Product Lifecycle Management
